My company's name, Jumanah, comes from a female Arabic name meaning Silver
Pearl. I have given each piece of my jewelry a female Arabic name to continue with this theme. My logo
design is from a floral arabesque. Floral arabesques are one genre of Islamic
visual arts related to architecture. The movement of arabesques, born from spirals, contains the irreducible irrationality of life. This is the freedom
of arabesques: the curves drawn are never mathematically perfect, the symmetry is rarely tyrannical and the distribution of ramifications contains
a certain element of randomness. This is the dynamic, unstable equilibrium of
life.
I have been an American expatriate living in Africa and Europe for the past
14 years. Currently, I live in Marrakech, Morocco. Marrakech, a meeting
place for trade caravans linking North and sub-Saharan Africa is majestically
situated in a large palm-grove at the foot of the Haut Atlas mountain range.
Eighteen beautiful kilometers of ochre-colored ramparts, the majestically
imposing Koutoubia minaret, the urban monuments and palaces, the renowned
Jemaa el Fna square, where dancers, musicians, snake-charmers and dealers in
magic potions vie for center stage. This unique city is a place where
tradition blends harmoniously into today's world.
Along life's path I have enjoyed a variety of eclectic passions. Gardening is
my first and foremost love that gives me the greatest satisfaction. It warms
my heart to design with my hands in the realm of plants. In any soil on this
earth, flowers all speak the same language. I am also an apprentice of
foreign languages, Moroccan cooking, cultural studies, spirituality,
astrology and alternative healing.
